As part of the internship, we encourage interns to ask why we do things the way we do, especially the things we've stopped asking about ourselves.

This week it was our explain panel, the part of the product that tells you why a piece of content came out the way it did. Fresh eyes brought a simple question we kept circling. What is this panel actually for? We show a lot of data, but we had never agreed on the one thing it needed to get across.

After a healthy debate, we talked our way to three things:

First, show the thinking. Who the content is for, what brand rules it followed, the choices Typeface made along the way. A number tells you what to think. The reasoning lets you make up your own mind.

Second, treat the person like a director, not a copyeditor. The panel should sharpen their taste so they can steer the work instead of fixing commas.

Third, help them get to a good decision fast. If someone is stuck in the tool digesting data and information, we have failed. The win is narrowing the options and guiding the tool in seconds.

If you look closely, all three are essentially the same idea. The model already made the content, so the panel is only there for the one call a person has to make. Is this right for my brand and audience?

That is exactly the point I made in my Agent Experience Gap post last April: "When a human only touches the product for the 2% that requires judgment, that surface has to load fast, show context instantly, and make the decision obvious." Our debate led us right back to it.

๐Ÿ’ก A note to anyone building product. Execution is cheap now. Judgment and taste are the scarce part, so build for that, not busywork.

We decided to rebuild the panel around that call. The audience and brand context up front. The reasoning in plain view, the decision a glance away. Less scoring, more of the why.

Love the intern energy. Thank you Aetheline Chua and Steven Zhang for pushing this forward. And thank you Anika and Jonathan for the sprint on the UX changes needed to support this.

Very excited about our new explain panel. Coming soon!
